Background of the Study
Vocational education has emerged as a vital tool for youth empowerment by providing practical skills and enhancing employability. In Ijebu-East Local Government Area, Ogun State, vocational programs offer alternative pathways to traditional academic routes, equipping young people with marketable competencies (Fagbemi, 2023). Such education emphasizes hands-on training and technical expertise, which are crucial in today’s competitive job market. Studies reveal that vocational training not only improves technical skills but also fosters entrepreneurial mindsets and self-reliance (Olawale, 2024). With rising unemployment rates, youth empowerment through vocational education is increasingly recognized as a key strategy for economic development and social stability (Obi, 2025). This study will evaluate the extent to which vocational education contributes to the empowerment of youth by enhancing skills, boosting confidence, and facilitating job creation. The investigation will also explore the challenges and opportunities within the vocational training sector, aiming to provide actionable recommendations for policymakers and educators.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of vocational education, many youths in Ijebu-East face challenges in accessing quality training programs that meet industry standards. Limited resources, inadequate facilities, and curriculum gaps hinder the effectiveness of vocational training, impacting youth empowerment and employability (Fagbemi, 2023). This situation creates a disconnect between the skills provided by vocational institutions and the needs of the labor market. The study seeks to identify these challenges and evaluate the overall impact of vocational education on empowering young people, ultimately informing improvements in program delivery and resource allocation.
